:EMLTF) announced today record results for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 1997. Net earnings rose to $12.2 million ($0.51 per share) compared to net earnings of $11.6 million ($0.50 per share) in 1996.

Earnings in the 1996 period included a gain on the sale of businesses of $7.2 million before tax. After tax the 1996 gain was equivalent to $.16 per share. Earnings excluding the gain therefore rose from $0.34 per share in 1996 to $0.51 per share in 1997, an increase of 50 percent.

Sales increased to $359.7 million in the third quarter up 9.5 percent from 1996, or 11.7 percent when excluding businesses sold in 1996. Operating earnings Operating Earnings
