Cellular modems, which contain their own antennas, plug into a PC Card slot or into the USB port of the computer and are available for a variety of wireless data services such as GPRS,  (ICM ICM Intercom

) for the A3 ALPHA(R) meter. The ICM is the latest addition to Elster Electricity's portfolio of communications option boards for the A3 ALPHA meter. This communications solution is based on analog cellular technology and provides significantly greater coverage than currently available with digital technology. With the under-the-cover ICM, the A3 ALPHA meter communicates using the vast radio frequency coverage of wireless public networks.

"An important success factor in wireless deployment is a network footprint," stated Sharon Allan, director of product management and business strategy. "This new offering gives our customers a solution they can use over the next several years while wireless carriers continue to fully deploy their digital networks. In many locations, no other wireless coverage exists except analog cellular. With the combination of the new ICM product and Elster Electricity's extensive communications options portfolio, our customers are seeing more success in automating meter data collection."

The ICM communications option is a reliable and cost-effective solution because it eliminates the need to install telephone lines and eliminates the expense associated with purchasing and installing external cellular boxes. The ICM option is available for hard-to-access areas where phone lines cannot be installed. Since the ICM is under the meter's cover, it is already in place and ready to operate when the A3 ALPHA meter is installed. No additional equipment or installation procedures are required. Elster Electricity's Metercat(TM) support software allows the user to view the status of the ICM, check its communications link, and configure the ICM at either the meter's site or remotely.

The ICM's robust design makes it a highly reliable and versatile communications solution. Options available include four relay outputs and an option to facilitate adding an external antenna.
