The Intel STS is administered by the Science Service, which began the competition in 1942 with Westinghouse; for many years, the  last week. Galloway, 18, is the first semifinalist from Elmira in the program's 61-year history, and one of only two in Oregon.

Galloway was in teacher Geriann Walker's science projects class last year, and was among several students to win previous honors. Her project examined the lead concentration of oyster oyster, edible bivalve mollusk found in beds in shallow, warm waters of all oceans. Intel Corp. presented her and the school with checks for $1,000.

"I knew something was up," said Galloway, who spotted her parents talking with a news crew in the parking lot beforehand. "But I didn't know what."

Galloway credits Walker, an award-winning science teacher, with turning her on to science, specifically chemistry. She's not sure where she'll attend college, but wants to pursue a career in chemistry or medicine.

Elmira principal Gene Morgan praised both Walker and Galloway.

"She's just a super kid," he said of Galloway. "She's the prototype of what you would like a whole school to look like."

The talent search is the country's oldest and most prestigious science competition for high school seniors.

The other Oregon semifinalist is Thuu Thuy Le, an 18-year-old student at Oregon Episcopal e·pis·co·pal
