Orr, has been awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor The Ellis Island Medal of Honor was established in 1986 to pay tribute to the immigrant experience and individual achievement, and are awarded to U.S. citizens from various ethnic backgrounds.  for outstanding citizenship, individual achievement, and encouragement of cultural unity.

The award comes from the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO Neco: see Necho. ), the largest organization of its kind in the U.S., serving as an umbrella group for over 350 ethnic organizations representing five million family members. NECO's mandate is to preserve ethnic diversity, promote ethnic and religious equality, tolerance and harmony, and combat injustice, hatred, and bigotry. (www.neco.org)

Designed to pay homage to the immigrant experience, as well as individual achievement, the Ellis Island Ellis Island, island, c.27 acres (10.9 hectares), in Upper New York Bay, SW of Manhattan island. Government-controlled since 1808, it was long the site of an arsenal and a fort, but most famously served (1892–1954) as the chief immigration station of the United  Medals of Honor are awarded to U.S. citizens from various ethnic backgrounds. The honorees are remarkable Americans who exemplify outstanding qualities supporting diversity in both their personal and professional lives.

This year's honorees will receive their awards at a ceremony in the Great Hall on Ellis Island in New York Harbor New York Harbor, a geographic term, refers collectively to the rivers, bays, and tidal estuaries near the mouth of the Hudson River in the vicinity of New York City. This is sometimes construed in the sense "the Ports of New York and New Jersey".  on Saturday, May 17, 2003. The Ellis Island Medal of Honor is sanctioned by the United States Congress.

The Ellis Island Medal of Honor was created in 1986 to honor the many ancestral groups who through struggle, sacrifice, and success, helped build this great nation and made outstanding contributions to America. It celebrates the richness and diversity of American life. The award honors not only individuals but also the pluralism and democracy that has enabled our ancestry groups to maintain their identities while becoming integral parts of the American way of life.
