Ellerbe Becket to Design State Farm Addition.

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 26, 1998--

Ellerbe Becket to Design State Farm Addition

State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company announced on June 19, 1998, that it will build a new 900,000-sf building as an expansion to the current Corporate South complex in Bloomington, Ill. It will cost about $200 million.

The building, to be constructed north of Hamilton Road in southeast Bloomington, primarily will house current functions, such as the customer response center, that operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Designed to ensure uninterrupted service for Sate Farm policyholders, a portion of the building will feature special electrical service and a heightened level of structural integrity that will enable it to withstand many severe weather events. Additional features will include special security and extended food service hours to better accommodate the needs and schedules of the building's employees.

"Since we first occupied Corporate South in 1996, we have had additional growth here, especially in some customer service functions," said Steve Stockton, vice president of administrative services. "This building is part of the master plan to handle that growth and advance customer service for our policyholders." The building will have room for about 2,400 employees, many of whom will be relocated from the customer response center in State Farm's corporate headquarters.

The groundbreaking will take place later this year, with a projected opening near the end of 2000.

Ellerbe Becket, headquartered in Minneapolis, will be the architect/engineer and Holder Corp. of Atlanta will be the general contractor.

"The 24x7 nature of this facility requires the kind of technical expertise our people thrive on," said Peter Styx Styx (stĭks), in Greek mythology, river of Hades that the souls of the dead had to cross on their journey from the realm of the living. It was a sacred river, and by its name even the gods took their most solemn oaths. The river was personified as a nymph, daughter of Oceanus and Tethys and mother of Nike., project director and principal with Ellerbe Becket. "It's a big project, and the schedule is very fast - we'll be completing structural drawings before the overall design is finished. By November, we expect to have 125 architects and engineers working full-time including additional AutoCAD technicians we are planning to hire for this and a number of similar projects."

The State Farm/Holder/Ellerbe Becket team has completed three successful 24x7 buildings to-date, in Atlanta, Dallas and Phoenix. The three firms work together as equal participants using a design-build process.

An innovator since its founding in 1909, Ellerbe Becket provides integrated architecture, engineering and construction services from 11 office locations worldwide.
