Ellen and Oscar.

I enjoyed the February 27 cover story on Ellen DeGeneres Ellen Lee DeGeneres (born January 26, 1958) is an American stand-up comedian, actress, and currently the Emmy Award-winning host of the syndicated talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

DeGeneres has hosted both the Academy Awards and the Primetime Emmys.
["All Eyes on Ellen"] but was annoyed to see The Advocate perpetuate the falsehood that the Oscar ceremony is seen by over a billion people. That's never even been close to true. Last years ceremony drew 38.59 million viewers in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. . (In no year has that number gone above 75 million.) There are around 300 million people in the United States, so roughly one in seven people tuned in last year.

But even if 75 million Americans are watching, that means 925,000,000 people outside the U.S. must be tuning in tuning in,

for the total audience to hit 1 billion. Who thinks that's likely?

At last report, the population of the world was a little over 6.5 billion, of which around a fifth live in China. I think it's safe to say that no significant Chinese hordes flock to Oscar parties and lust to find out what the stars are wearing. Few in China speak English; fewer still see our movies. That and of course the fact that the show is not televised there would tend to cut into ratings a bit.

It's unbelievable that Ellen DeGeneres would even consider hosting the Oscars after the Academy's gay-bashing fest last year. The Oscar now stands for precisely nothing after the widespread antigay bigotry, sham, and cover-up of 2006. That DeGeneres would now allow herself to be used as the Academy's shill shill   Slang

When a court uses the word unconscionable to describe conduct, it means that the conduct does not conform to the dictates of conscience.

Ditto The Advocate for celebrating this insult to gay people everywhere.

For those of us who "know" Oscar and Oscar history, last year's snub of Broke-back Mountain came down to homophobia. The Academy has denied it, they chose Ellen as host, and they are marketing the Oscars to gays in West Hollywood by way of billboards, something they've never done before.
