In her interview with Gallagher, Jessica Morgan sheds light on both the conceptual and formal elements of Gallagher's usually large-scale paintings. The reader is privy to the thoughts of the artist who has a sophisticated and intellectual engagement regarding her own work, and a critical understanding of both the artistic and social contexts in which that work is viewed.

In the final essay, Robert Storr speaks about the problematic intersection of race and aesthetics in Gallagher's work, arguing that the tension between the two is--in large part--the point of the paintings and not meant to be resolved. Storr points out that Gallagher's work fits squarely with the history and discourse of Western painting. Moreover, he argues that Gallagher's work asserts that even the most extreme brand of racial politics does not mitigate the need or the desire for beauty.
