Tate cites influences on Gallagher's work ranging from bebop bebop or bop Jazz characterized by harmonic complexity, convoluted melodic lines, and frequent shifting of rhythmic accent. In the mid-1940s, a group of musicians, including Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, and Charlie Parker, rejected the conventions of to hip hop, from abstract expressionism to minimalism minimalism, schools of contemporary art and music, with their origins in the 1960s, that have emphasized simplicity and objectivity. His essay illuminates the pervasive influence of black art and culture in Gallagher's formally rigorous work. In her interview with Gallagher, Jessica Morgan sheds light on both the conceptual and formal elements of Gallagher's usually large-scale paintings. The reader is privy to the thoughts of the artist who has a sophisticated and intellectual engagement regarding her own work, and a critical understanding of both the artistic and social contexts in which that work is viewed. In the final essay, Robert Storr speaks about the problematic intersection of race and aesthetics in Gallagher's work, arguing that the tension between the two is--in large part--the point of the paintings and not meant to be resolved. Storr points out that Gallagher's work fits squarely with the history and discourse of Western painting. Moreover, he argues that Gallagher's work asserts that even the most extreme brand of racial politics does not mitigate the need or the desire for beauty. --Kira Lynn Harris is an artist living in New York New York, state, United States New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States.
