Elfin sensors. (In Gear).

Who: Sick Inc. (Minneapolis, MN)

What: ELF photoelectric sensor A photoelectric sensor, or photoeye, is a device used to detect the presence of an object by using a light transmitter, often infrared, and a photoelectric receiver. There are three functional types.

Why you should care: Sick says that ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) Pronounced "a-sick." A chip that is custom designed for a specific application rather than a general-purpose chip such as a microprocessor.  technology and creative engineering have made its ELF sensor one of the smallest and least expensive in the industry. It is targeted at material handling and packaging applications.

Pertinent Data: The ELF features: light immunity, reverse polarity (1) The direction of charged particles, which may determine the binary status of a bit.

(2) In micrographics, the change in the light to dark relationship of an image when copies are made.
protection, overload See information overload and overloading.  protection and short circuit protection. It uses LED technology to achieve optical performance that Sick says is the best in its class. The ELF is available in three versions: reflex retro-reflective, background suppression and energetic. The background suppression model suppresses interference caused by moving or reflective objects in the background and has a detection range up to 50 mm. The energetic model has a detection range of up to 100 mm.
