TENNIS: Elena Dementieva held her nerve in an error-strewn Rogers Cup final to defeat fellow Russian Maria Sharapova 6-4 6-3 in Toronto.

Sharapova was playing in her first final since coming back from a ten-month lay-off due to a shoulder injury, but struggled with her service to concede the first set.

The three-time Grand Slam winner could not find any rhythm sending down nine double faults in an opening set during which she was broken in four of her five service games.

The victory was Dementieva's third WTA Tour title of the year.
