Elements of Biblical Exegesis exegesis

Scholarly interpretation of religious texts, using linguistic, historical, and other methods. In Judaism and Christianity, it has been used extensively in the study of the Bible. Textual criticism tries to establish the accuracy of biblical texts.

G. has written a book for students, teachers, pastors, and others wishing to think and write about the Bible carefully. It offers "basic" information, clearly presented, with helpful chapter summaries, practical hints, and exercises designed to gain insight and practice. His seven elements of exegesis include a survey of the text, contextual analysis, formal analysis, detailed analysis, synthesis, reflection, and expansion and refinement of the exegesis.
