Electronystagmography in a blind patient with dizziness.A blind 90-year-old man came to the office with a 1-month history of lightheadedness that occurred while he was standing or walking. He was unable to walk in a straight line. The man said that during these episodes, he felt as though he had drunk too much champagne. He reported no hearing loss or aural fullness, but he experienced a binaural binaural /bi·nau·ral/ (bi-naw´r'l) pertaining to both ears. bin·au·ral adj. When he tried to direct his eyes straight ahead, his line of gaze strayed to the left, and he was unable to perform the sharpened tandem Romberg test. He had earlier experienced a "slight stroke." Electronystagmography revealed a satisfactory calibration for a blind patient. He had a direction-fixed right-beating nystagmus Nystagmus Definition Rhythmic, oscillating motions of the eyes are called nystagmus. The to-and-fro motion is generally involuntary. Vertical nystagmus occurs much less frequently than horizontal nystagmus and is often, but not necessarily, a sign of in all positions, which was markedly variable in the 300 supine position. A reversal of the right-beating nystagmus following right-cool and left-warm stimuli indicated a binaural peripheral stimulation with appropriate central processing.
