Business/Technology Editors

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. and FOSTER CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 21, 2001

Electronics for Imaging, Inc. (NASDAQ: EFII), and Pageflex, Inc., announced today a worldwide software development and licensing agreement to offer customers more robust, industry standard variable data printing (VDP) solutions. Under the agreement, the companies plan to incorporate Pageflex VDP technologies into EFI products to be distributed through EFI channels. The companies will demonstrate their solutions at the Pageflex and EFI On Demand booths, #1465 and #1641.

"Pageflex(TM) has a strong reputation for quality solutions in the evolving field of variable data printing through their Persona(TM) and Mpower(TM) products," said Ghilad Dziesietnik, Vice President, Core Software and Workflow Applications at EFI. "EFI is committed to promoting open VDP standards to provide our customers the most cost-effective, efficient, and flexible tools for personalization and customization in printing. Pageflex technology fits well with those objectives."

"We are delighted that EFI plans to offer Pageflex technology to its customers," said Sang Lee, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Pageflex. "We have both been working to accelerate adoption of PPML as the industry standard for variable data printing. This new agreement enables us to work together more closely in the future to bring further innovative PPML solutions to the marketplace."

PPML (personalized print markup language) is the VDP industry standard being promoted by the Print on Demand Initiative (PODi) (www.podi.org). PODI General Manager Doug Johnston says EFI and Pageflex "have been instrumental in raising awareness about the need for a standard in print personalization."

About Pageflex, Inc.

Pageflex, Inc. (www.pageflexinc.com), develops, markets, and supports on-demand document composition solutions and related technology. Its products include Mpower, a variable data enterprise solution, and Persona, a variable data desktop publishing application. Both products use NuDoc(TM), Pageflex's XML-based composition engine.

NuDoc technology uses flexible design templates incorporating "spring-loaded" text and image containers that dynamically adjust page layouts based on the sizes and shapes of the variable text and images flowed into them. Text and image containers resize and reposition to automatically maintain the design integrity of each document. Quark and PageMaker documents can be ported via Adobe InDesign using Pageflex's DesignOut plug-in.

Built on open standards, Pageflex products import data from any ODBC-compliant database and use XML as the data format between databases and page composition. The Company was established in 1999 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Bitstream Inc. (NASDAQ: BITS, www.bitstream.com).
