Electrical Brotherhood raises $29,000 for cancer.


The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) is a labor union which represents workers in the electrical industry in the United States and Canada, particularly electricians, or Inside Wiremen, in the construction industry and linemen and other employees of public  Local 164, based in Paramus, N.J., recently has raised nearly $29,000 as part of Project Grandma, an annual fund-raising project established in honor of breast cancer survivors Cancer survivors are those individuals with cancer of any type, current or past, who are still living. The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) pioneered the definition of survivor as from the time of diagnosis and for the balance of life, a person diagnosed with  and their families.

The funds have been earmarked for cancer support services support services Psychology Non-health care-related ancillary services–eg, transportation, financial aid, support groups, homemaker services, respite services, and other services  and programs at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, N.J., and Gilda's Club Gilda's Club, named in tribute to the late comic actress Gilda Radner, who died of ovarian cancer in 1989, is a community meeting place for people living with cancer, their families and friends. There are 22 open clubhouses and nine in development in North America.  Northern New Jersey of Hackensack, N.J.

"Local 164 remains dedicated to increasing awareness about early detection, honoring breast cancer survivors for their courageous fight and supporting those who are currently battling this disease," said John Nordyk, who serves as Local 164's chairman of the event along with Barry Hammond.

"Holy Name Hospital and Gilda's Club provide vital diagnostic and supportive services that bring the patient and family together to confront the wide range of physical and emotional challenges associated with cancer."

The annual campaign includes a capital drive, special events and raffles throughout the year, capped off by an evening to honor breast cancer patients, survivors and their families during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention and cure. .

This year's event included a grand prize raffle for a trip to Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. It is the largest city in Nevada and the center of one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the United States.  for two.

"While it is our goal to raise much-needed funds to combat breast cancer, our annual gathering has become a celebration of hope and what these women and their spouses, children and friends have endured," explained Hammond. "Project Grandma has become a great source of inspiration and support for all of us."

"Breast cancer touches so many women regardless of age, race, lifestyle or personal family history," said Richard Dressel, business manager.

"At Local 164, where many of us have been personally touched by this dreadful disease, our goal is to support organizations like Holy Name Hospital and Gilda's Club that are committed to easing the burdens of those in a similar situation."

As a result of ongoing fund-raising and volunteer efforts, Local 164 has received numerous awards for its community outreach projects, including the President's Service Award, which is the nation's top honor for volunteer service.
