Electric Mail Expands PerimeterProtect Service to Include Email Archiving; Service Enhances Customer Compliance with Increasing Regulatory Requirements.

BURNABY, British Columbia -- The Electric Mail Company, a provider of managed secure email services to businesses, today announced the addition of email archiving to its PerimeterProtect(TM) suite of services. Archiving provides the user with an on-line copy of all emails received through the service. PerimeterProtect is a comprehensive solution that delivers up-front email messaging protection and continuity through spam and content filtering, as well as virus blocking.

The addition of this email archive service, available to businesses who have Microsoft Exchange(TM) 2000 or Exchange 2003 email servers, can help companies comply with document preservation, privacy and security requirements under U.S. and Canadian regulations, such as Sarbanes-Oxley (covering public companies), Health Insurance Portability and Accounting Act (HIPAA) (applicable to "personally identifiable heath information"), SEC 17a 3-4 (covering brokers and dealers of securities), PIPEDA (Canadian Privacy Law), Graham Leach Bliley (covering various financial institutions), The Fair Credit Reporting Act (covering credit reporting agencies), and Department of Defense requirements (defense contractors).

Teaming with Fortiva to provide this service, the solution takes a hybrid approach to message archiving -- combining a managed data archiving service with hardware placed at the customer site. This approach is designed to alleviate concerns about sharing sensitive corporate data with third parties. A data encryption appliance, which integrates directly with the customer's Exchange and Active Directory servers, is placed at the customer's location behind corporate firewalls. A copy of every email message is sent to the appliance, where data is encrypted using DoubleBlind Encryption(TM) technology before it leaves the firewall and is sent to the messaging archive. The encryption key is stored on the appliance, separate from the archived data, so data cannot be tampered with or viewed without access to both the archives and the appliance. This provides an important layer of protection against data theft, since two completely separate infrastructures would need to be breached to gain access to the data.
