The PSC action will allow Electric Lightwave to offer Utah consumers a choice of local telephone providers for the first time.

"Today's approval by the Utah Public Service Commission means that Electric Lightwave can assure that the citizens of Utah will have access to higher quality and sensibly-priced telecommunications services in a new competitive marketplace," stated Dave Sharkey, president of Electric Lightwave.

"Electric Lightwave will provide high quality, end-to-end and seamless voice, data and video services, customized to meet the needs of our customers. This will allow businesses to purchase all their telecommunications requirements from one company, greatly improving the ability of businesses to communicate with each other and with their customers." continued Sharkey.

Electric Lightwave's entry into the Utah marketplace is consistent with a growing trend among state regulators to adopt new policies favoring open telecommunications competition. Electric Lightwave currently provides basic telephone services in Seattle and has applied for similar authority in Oregon.

"Our company can and will provide timely installation, maintenance and other important customer services with the added security of redundant lines to guarantee service under almost any situation." stated Gerald Capps, Electric Lightwave's Salt Lake City regional manager.
