RICHARDSON, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 7, 2003

White Rock Networks, a leading provider of next-generation optical transport systems for the local metro transport market, announced today that Electric Lightwave, Inc. (ELI Eli (ē`lī), in the Bible, high priest and judge of Israel, teacher of the boy Samuel.

for OC-192c carrier to carrier service delivery. ELI is taking advantage of the VLX2020's low-cost OC-192 delivery capability to provide an OC-192c service to its carrier customers.

The low-cost, low-power, low-profile VLX2020 provides ELI with the full network management capabilities required for carrier-class networks, including SONET performance monitoring, customer demarcation point The location within a home or office where the lines from the telephone company connect to the customer's lines.  and remote provisioning and loopback testing functions. The VLX2020's auto-provisioning features simplify and speed installation, and, at only two rack units (3.5") high, the VLX2020 permits ELI to deliver service to its customers in only one-fifth the space or less of other vendors' SONET equipment. The VLX2020 allows ELI to provide enhanced reliability for its customers, react swiftly and smoothly to customer demands and reduce central office space usage, resulting in savings of OPEX See CAPEX.  as well as CAPEX dollars.

"White Rock is proud to provide metro optical transport equipment to a carrier with high technical standards such as ELI," said Lonnie Martin, Founder/CEO of White Rock. "Our NEBS Level 3-certified products are designed for carrier-class environments, and the flexibility of our architecture allows us to add new features rapidly to meet customer demands."

The VLX2020 is the fourth member of White Rock's family of modular, scalable and stackable "building-block" optical networking Communications between computers, telephones and other electronic devices using light. An optical network is far more reliable and has far greater potential transmission capacity than networking in the electrical domain. See optical fiber.  products. The VLX2020's reduced footprint helps trim the costs carriers now pay to lease space in central offices, while its lower power consumption reduces carriers' energy expenses. The system allows carriers to support a wide range of services from OC-192 to DS3. The VLX2020 is the industry's smallest, smartest OC-48/192 SONET ADM.

The VLX2020's scalable architecture allows for seamless plug-and-play integration with existing White Rock building blocks, including products from the photonic layer such as the VLX1010(TM) Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing See CWDM.  (CWDM (Course WDM) An optical transmission method that is used for shorter distances than dense WDM (DWDM). Also known as "wide WDM," CWDM transmits fewer channels and uses wider spacing between the channels for distances up to 60 km. Wider spacing up to 25 nm, compared to 1. ) Terminal/OADM for metropolitan networks as well as service layer solutions such as transparent wire-rate Gigabit Ethernet An Ethernet standard that transmits at 1 Gbps. Used mostly to connect high-end workstations and servers as well as for network backbones, Gigabit Ethernet transmits full duplex from point to point using switches and half duplex in a shared environment (CSMA/CD) using a hub.  transport. The VLX2020's modular approach allows carriers to incorporate new technology faster than an integrated architecture.

Coupled with White Rock's other building-block products released earlier this year, the VLX2020 makes OC-192 truly affordable in the metro network.
