Election 2000: Register to vote online; use absentee ballot if you must.

If people with disabilities voted at the same rate as those without disabilities, there would have been 5 million additional voters in 1998. Now, as Congress considers plans for prescription drug prescription drug Prescription medication Pharmacology An FDA-approved drug which must, by federal law or regulation, be dispensed only pursuant to a prescription–eg, finished dose form and active ingredients subject to the provisos of the Federal Food, Drug,  benefits under Medicare and protections for people in managed care, there are more reasons than ever for people with MS to vote.

There are barriers. The most recent Federal Election Commission report states that at least 20,000 polling places are inaccessible. "We think the real number may be even higher," said Susan Sanabria, the Society's vice president for Advocacy "We're encouraging our chapter Government Relations Committees to focus on fixing this."

For Election Day 2000 a new option and an old one are in place. Residents of 47 states (all except New Hampshire New Hampshire, one of the New England states of the NE United States. It is bordered by Massachusetts (S), Vermont, with the Connecticut R. forming the boundary (W), the Canadian province of Quebec (NW), and Maine and a short strip of the Atlantic Ocean (E). , North Dakota North Dakota, state in the N central United States. It is bordered by Minnesota, across the Red River of the North (E), South Dakota (S), Montana (W), and the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba (N). , and Wyoming) can now register to vote via the Internet. Log on to <www.beavoter.org>. Users will receive a printed form in the mail to review for accuracy, sign, and mail back to the designated registration office. That's all there is to it.

"If it's not possible to get to your polling place," Ms. Sanabria said, "call your town or city clerk In the United States, a City Clerk is an elected or appointed official who is responsible as the official keeper of the municipal records. In some places, the Clerk may be known as the "Village Clerk" or "Town Clerk".  and find out how to vote by mail using an absentee One who has left, either temporarily or permanently, his or her domicile or usual place of residence or business. It's a stopgap solution, but it's a better choice than being voiceless when issues concerning you and your family are at stake."
