Elder-Beerman Reports September Sales.

Business Editors

DAYTON, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 11, 2001

Sales for The Elder-Beerman Stores Corp. (Nasdaq:EBSC EBSC Elder-Beerman Stores Corp.
EBSC East Bay Sanctuary Covenant (Berkeley, CA)
EBSC Embedded Bitmap Scaling
EBSC Elmbrook Swim Club (Brookfield, Wisconsin)
EBSC English Bay Swim Club
) were $59.5 million for the five weeks ended October 6, 2001, a total sales increase of 6.5 percent versus the five weeks ended September 30, 2000. Comparable store sales were essentially flat with a slight decrease of 0.1 percent compared to the same period last year. The events of September 11 initially had a negative impact on sales. The best performing businesses in September were ladies' coats, special sizes sportswear, juniors' sportswear, shoes and the home store, including furniture.

Because a major sales event Noun 1. sales event - an occasion (usually brief) for buying at specially reduced prices; "they held a sale to reduce their inventory"; "I got some great bargains at their annual sale"

shifted into the last week of September 2001 from October 2000, combined September and October sales will provide a better comparison to 2000 sales than either month's numbers will provide separately. Due to the 53-week calendar in 2000, sales comparisons for the rest of the fall season will be affected by event shifts.
