) were $46.0 million for the four-week period ended August 31, 2002, a total sales decrease of 2.3 percent versus the four week period ended September 1, 2001. Comparable store sales decreased 5.4 percent compared to the same period last year. On a comparable store basis, the best performing businesses in August were ladies' moderate sportswear, special size sportswear, accessories and furniture.

Year to date through August 31, 2002, sales were $320.7 million, a total sales increase of 1.2 percent. Year to date comparable sales decreased 2.7 percent versus the same period last year.
