Elder-Beerman Announces January Comparable Store Sales Increase of 4.2%; Fiscal 1999 Comparable Store Sales Increased 2.0%.

) today announced sales results for the four weeks, fourth quarter and fiscal year ended January 29, 2000.

January total store sales increased 7.1 percent to $27.6 million. Comparable store sales increased 4.2 percent from the same period last year. Businesses that performed well include ladies' better sportswear, dresses, men's and young men's sportswear, children's apparel and cosmetics cosmetics, preparations externally applied to change or enhance the beauty of skin, hair, nails, lips, and eyes. The use of body paint for ornamental and religious purposes has been common among primitive peoples from prehistoric times (see body-marking). .

Total store sales for the fourth quarter increased 5.6 percent to $228.1 million. Comparable store sales increased 2.8 percent from the fourth quarter of fiscal 1998.

For fiscal 1999, Elder-Beerman reported total store sales increased 9.5 percent to $658.5 million, and comparable store sales increased 2.0 percent over fiscal 1998.
