January total store sales increased 7.1 percent to $27.6 million. Comparable store sales increased 4.2 percent from the same period last year. Businesses that performed well include ladies' better sportswear, dresses, men's and young men's sportswear, children's apparel and cosmetics cosmetics, preparations externally applied to change or enhance the beauty of skin, hair, nails, lips, and eyes. Total store sales for the fourth quarter increased 5.6 percent to $228.1 million. Comparable store sales increased 2.8 percent from the fourth quarter of fiscal 1998. For fiscal 1999, Elder-Beerman reported total store sales increased 9.5 percent to $658.5 million, and comparable store sales increased 2.0 percent over fiscal 1998.
