Elantec Semiconductor Introduces a Read Channel IC for the Optical Storage Market; The EL6261C Provides a New Function in the Growing Family of Optical Products.Business Editors/High-tech Writers MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 20, 2000 Elantec Semiconductor, Inc. (Nasdaq: ELNT), a leader in high-performance analog ICs, is now shipping the EL6261C, an 8-channel switchable-gain, pre-amplifier targeted for the read channel designs in the emerging CD/DVD-Writable optical storage market. The new EL6261C amplifier complements the Elantec family of industry-standard laser drivers by offering a read channel solution for optical pickup head (OPU OPU Ovum Pick-Up OPU Office des Publications Universitaires OPU Optical Channel Payload Unit OPU Oil Pick Up (spinning) OPU Optical Pickup Head (DVD drives) OPU Outstation Processing Unit ) designs used in CD and DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc. DVD in full digital video disc or digital versatile disc Type of optical disc. The DVD represents the second generation of compact-disc (CD) technology. applications. The EL6261C is a highly integrated analog mixed-signal IC designed to amplify the read channel photo detector diode currents, while performing buffering and gain-switching functions. Available in both the 24-pin QSOP QSOP Quarter Size Outline Package QSOP Quarter Small Outline Package QSOP Quad Small Outline Package QSOP Quadripartite Standing Operating Procedures QSOP Quarterly Standing Order Plan QSOP Quality Standard Operating Procedure QSOP Quarter Sized Outline Package and 32-pin QFN QFN Quad Flat No-Lead QFN Queen Fan Newsletter (rock band) QFN Quad Flat No Leads packages, the EL6261C can be placed close to the photo detector on the OPU for higher performance. The EL6261C contains four 20MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc. transimpedance amplifiers and four 80MHz transimpedance amplifiers. Outputs of the four 80MHz amplifiers are averaged to provide a differential 80MHz-sum output. All eight amplifiers have selectable 8K, 15K or 40K gain control, thus allowing the drive to read all standard CD and DVD media types. Steve Sacarisen, Elantec's Director of Strategic Marketing, Optical Products Group states, "The EL6261C is our first product targeted specifically for the read channel pre-amplifier function. By developing this part we are able to supply both analog read and write channel ICs to CD/DVD-Writable drive OEM's." Samples and evaluation module boards of the EL6261C in QSOP24 and QFN32 packages are available now. Full production will begin in April 2000. Pricing for the EL6261C is available from the Elantec direct sales offices only.
