Elantec Semiconductor Introduces a New High Speed Laser Driver in an Ultra-Thin Package; The EL6242C Enables Faster Slim-Line CD-R/W Drive Designs.Business Editors/High-Tech Writers MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 19, 2000 Elantec Semiconductor, Inc. (Nasdaq:ELNT), an industry leader in high-performance laser driver ICs, today unveiled its newest high-speed laser driver IC, the EL6242C. As it is an integral part of the optical pickup unit (OPU OPU Ovum Pick-Up OPU Office des Publications Universitaires OPU Optical Channel Payload Unit OPU Oil Pick Up (spinning) OPU Optical Pickup Head (DVD drives) OPU Outstation Processing Unit ), the critical design sub-component used in CD-R/W drives, our new EL6242C's compact size and superior performance enable OEMs to develop cutting-edge CD-R/W optical disk drive products with greatly increased read/write (R/W R/W Read/Write R/W Right-Of-Way R/W Rotary Wing (aviation) R/W Random Width R/W Reimbursable Work R/W Raw Weight ) speeds. The EL6242C features three current channels needed for the read, erase, and write laser drive power levels, and also integrates an automatic power control amplifier for coupling using an external power monitor diode. The three laser power levels are compliant with the industry-standard Orange Specification for CD-R (CD-Recordable) A writable CD technology using a type of compact disc that can be recorded, but not erased (CD-Rs are "write once" discs). CD-R discs are used to master CD-ROMs, to back up data and to make copies of data for distribution. and CD-R/W write strategy disc formats. In addition, the EL6242C offers external timing control of the integrated high frequency modulation frequency modulation: see modulation; radio. (1) An earlier magnetic disk encoding method that places clock bits onto the medium along with the data bits. It was superseded by MFM and RLL. oscillator oscillator Mechanical or electronic device that produces a back-and-forth periodic motion. A pendulum is a simple mechanical oscillator that swings with a constant amplitude, requiring the addition of energy at each swing only to compensate for the energy lost because of air , which is used to reduce laser read-noise and consequently the read-error rate. This integration reduces component count thereby lowering solution costs, reduces signal routing which shortens design time, and saves space which enables more compact OPU designs. Steve Sacarisen, Director of Strategic Marketing, Optical Products Group said, "The EL6242C laser driver joins our growing family of next generation laser drivers that offers OEMs the highest performance and most cost-effective solution for the higher R/W speeds demanded by the PC and consumer CD-R/W drive markets. Furthermore, the ultra-thin LPP LPP Legitimate Peripheral Participation (community of practice) LPP Liberian People's Party (Liberia) LPP Leak Point Pressure LPP Land Partnership Plan LPP Lean Premixed Prevaporized package option makes the EL6242C an ideal choice for slim-line design drives in applications such as PC notebooks, where size is a critical design factor." Pricing for the EL6242C is $2.50 in 10,000-piece quantities. The new ultra-thin 24-LPP package as well as the 24-pin QSOP QSOP Quarter Size Outline Package QSOP Quarter Small Outline Package QSOP Quad Small Outline Package QSOP Quadripartite Standing Operating Procedures QSOP Quarterly Standing Order Plan QSOP Quality Standard Operating Procedure QSOP Quarter Sized Outline Package package are sampling now. Production lead times for both package options is 8-10 weeks.
