a single mother feels as she waits for her 15-year-old son to come home, or "Naveed," in which a young woman worries that her lifetime record of lovers will be too high when she finally meets her true love. Both capture genuine emotions in a few pages, but one story is poignant and the other shallow. Characters in his stories include talking dogs, as in "After I Was Thrown in the River and Before I Drowned," but most are about young people in pursuit of something--a true love, the rescue of a cousin who has once again tried to kill himself, the meaning of an atrocity.

Eggers tries too hard to be original in his style, which leads to inconsistency in the quality of the writing. Readers will be thrilled with one story and disappointed in the next, wanting some well-done stories to be longer and dragging themselves to the end of others. Nola Theiss, Sanibel, FL
