 robbery petitioned for federal habeas relief. The district court dismissed the petition as time-barred under the provisions of the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act (AEDPA). The prisoner appealed. The appeals court vacated and remanded. The court held that the prison's failure to provide a copy of AEDPA constituted an "impediment A disability or obstruction that prevents an individual from entering into a contract.

Infancy, for example, is an impediment in making certain contracts. Impediments to marriage include such factors as consanguinity between the parties or an earlier marriage that is still valid.
