Egenera Unveils New Processing Blades Based on Quad-Core Intel(R) Xeon(R) Technology.

MARLBORO Marlboro or Marlborough (märl`bərō), city (1990 pop. 31,813), Middlesex co., E Mass.; settled on the site of a Native American village 1657, inc. as a city 1890. , Mass. -- Egenera Inc., a leader in datacenter virtualization An umbrella term for enhancing a computer's ability to do work. Following are the ways virtualization is used.

Partitioning the computer's memory into separate and isolated "virtual machines" simulates multiple machines within one physical computer.
architecture, today announced it will expand its line of Egenera([R]) Processing Blade([TM]) modules with two new two-socket offerings incorporating the new Quad-Core Intel([R]) Xeon([R]) Processor 5350, formerly codenamed "Clovertown" by Intel.

The newest Egenera pBlade([TM]) modules will deliver the highest performance Intel architecture for two-socket Quad-Core processors, utilizing a 1333MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  front side bus and 667MHz fully buffered memory Buffered memory is an older term for registered memory.

However, some new large systems use "fully buffered memory". In normal registered/buffered memory only the control lines are buffered, in fully buffered memory the data lines are buffered as well.
. The Quad-Core Intel([R]) Xeon([R]) Processor 5350 will deliver eight cores of processing power at the traditional price of 2- and 4-core Intel pBlades. Customers who have traditionally depended on 4 x Dual-Core processors may be able to get similar application performance from this new two-socket pBlade. The Egenera pBlade modules also support Intel Virtualization Technology See VT.  (VT), which provides silicon-level support for CPU CPU

 virtualization.

In a related announcement, Egenera today unveiled vBlade([TM]) software that eliminates the need for multiple management products for physical servers and virtual machines by providing a single environment for configuring, allocating, repurposing and managing both types of resources. With Egenera vBlade software, multiple operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap.  and applications can be guests on a single pBlade, enabling higher utilization and efficiency without adding management complexity. Managing the virtual environment, including configuring, allocating, repurposing and managing is done through Egenera's PAN Manager software - the same way customers have always managed their physical resources. (See related release, "Egenera Extends Virtualization Leadership with vBlade Software").

The new Egenera pBlades will be populated with two Intel EM64T (Extended Memory 64 Technology) The first name of Intel's 64-bit x86 CPUs. In 2006, the name of the technology was changed to "Intel 64." See Intel 64.  Xeon processors at the speed of 2.66GHz with either 16 or 32GB of memory. Beta units will be available for Egenera customers at the end of this month. The new Quad-Core Intel Xeon processor-based Egenera pBlade modules will enter general availability in Q1 2007. Operating systems certified to run on these 1U pBlades include Microsoft([R]) Windows([R]) 2003, Red Hat([R]) Enterprise Linux([R]) 3 and 4, SuSE([R]) Linux Enterprise Server 9, and Sun([R])Solaris([TM]) 10.

"Intel's new Quad-Core Xeon Processor 5350-based pBlades are ideal for supporting large, mission-critical applications and Egenera vBlade software. With Quad-Core performance and extended memory capabilities, customers will be able to get impressive application performance," said Susan Davis Susan A. Davis (born April 13, 1944), is an American politician who has been a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives since 2001, representing California's 53rd congressional district (map). , Egenera vice president. "With today's focus on squeezing every ounce of value from each watt of power, the combination of Quad-Core performance and virtual environments allows customers to fine tune their deployments and gain superior performance per Watt."

"The combination of Egenera vBlade software with Intel Quad-Core processors featuring Intel Virtualization Technology is expected to provide enterprise customers with more efficient virtualization capabilities, improved cost savings, better energy efficiency and new levels of performance in the datacenter," said Kirk Skaugen, vice president, Digital Enterprise Group, Intel. "Our collaboration with Egenera enables customers to test, build and optimize their solutions around quad-core computing and Intel Virtualization Technology."

Availability

Egenera Processing Blades based on the Quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor 5350 will be commercially available in Q1 of 2007.
