Egenera Featured at Intel Developer Forum; Intel Highlights Egenera BladeFrame in Modular Computing.

Business/Technology Editors

Intel Developer Forum Intel Developer Forum (IDF), is a twice yearly gathering of technologists to discuss Intel products and products based around Intel products. The first IDF was in 1997. There is usually a Spring IDF and a Fall IDF.  2002

Intel(R) Corporation is spotlighting the Egenera(TM) BladeFrame(TM) as part of a discussion on modular computing. Mike Fister, Intel senior vice president and general manager of the Intel Enterprise Platforms Group, highlighted the topic today in a major keynote at IDF.

Fister explained that modular computing is a datacenter trend that is driving more agile corporate IT infrastructures, consolidation (smaller systems, less cabling, lower power) within those infrastructures, and dynamic and transparent deployment of compute, I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

Earlier this week, Abhi Talwalkar, vice president of Intel Enterprise Platforms Group, demonstrated a BladeFrame system with Dave McAllister, director of strategic technologies for Egenera, during a conference session titled "Intel's Vision and Strategy for Modular Computing." Intel asked Egenera to participate based on the BladeFrame's real-time scalability, self-managing and self-healing characteristics, ability to create virtualized resource pools, and inherent reliability and redundancy.

"The Egenera BladeFrame embodies the characteristics of a leading modular computing design--it's flexible, scalable and self-healing and priced competitively. Customers will value Egenera's platform capabilities," said Talwalkar.

The Intel Developer Forum is the technology industry's premier event for hardware and software developers. Held worldwide throughout the year, IDF brings together key industry players to discuss cutting-edge technology and products for PCs, servers, communications equipment, and handheld clients. The Egenera BladeFrame, with its Processing Area Network (PAN) architecture, assembles purpose-built hardware and virtualization software in a fully integrated computing platform that enables enterprise-class datacenters to quantifiably achieve savings, optimize application availability and drive market agility. Using the Red Hat(R) Linux(R) operating system, the BladeFrame creates a pool of up to 96 server-class Intel processors on 24 hot-pluggable Egenera Processing Blade(TM) modules interconnected via a very high-speed, internal network and deployed through Egenera PAN Manager(TM) software. With no local disk, and therefore no state, Processing Blades are anonymous and interchangeable--a unique characteristic that enables datacenters to dynamically increase, decrease and reallocate Verb 1. reallocate - allocate, distribute, or apportion anew; "Congressional seats are reapportioned on the basis of census data"

The BladeFrame combines the reliability and manageability of a mainframe, the scalability of distributed computing and the price/performance of commodity components for mission-critical applications.
