Egenera, Inc., an Internet-infrastructure company, today announced the appointment of Ben Sprachman as vice president of hardware and manufacturing. In this role, Sprachman is charged with turning Egenera's concept for breakthrough Internet data center technology into a marketable product.

With 20 years' management experience designing and developing large-scale computer systems, Sprachman oversees Egenera's hardware engineering and manufacturing efforts, including industrial, electrical and mechanical design plus design for test, manufacturing and assembly. Since these activities are accomplished through a combination of in-house talent and outsourcing, an integral part of Sprachman's role involves building strategic alliances to complement the Company's product-development activities. Moreover, he is responsible for Egenera's hardware roadmap, and will leverage his market knowledge and industry relationships to guide the Company's long-range vision.

Prior to joining Egenera, Sprachman held senior development positions at Ascend Communications, Stratus Computer and Prime Computer, where he proved his ability to conceptualize and launch new products. During his tenure as Ascend's director of development, the company introduced the Ascend Signaling Gateway - the industry's first Internet call-diversion solution. As director of hardware development at Stratus, Sprachman guided the Continuum line of continuously available computers, including the establishment of strategic relationships with Intel, HP and other industry leaders. At Prime, Sprachman advanced from CPU designer to director of development with full engineering responsibility for the 50 Series product line including the Primos OS kernel. He holds a Bachelor of Applied Science degree from the University of Toronto.
