The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers See ICANN.

(body, networking) Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers - (ICANN) The non-profit corporation that was formed to assume responsibility for IP address allocation, protocol parameter assignment, domain name system management, and root server system
(ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, www.icann.org) A non-profit, international association founded in 1998 and incorporated in the U.S. It is the successor to IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority), which manages Internet addresses, domain names and the huge number ) is once again weighing the creation of a dot-travel domain similar to dot-com or dot-edu. A top-level domain (TLD (Top Level Domain) The highest level domain category in the Internet domain naming system. There are two types: the generic top level domains (gTLDs) such as .com, .org, and .net, and the country codes, such as .ca, .uk and .jp. See gTLD and Internet domain name. ) is a specific space on the Internet dedicated to a particular community--in this case, the travel and tourism industry.

The Travel Partnership Corporation (TTPC TTPC Type Transaction Phrase Code
TTPC Trans Tunisian Pipeline Company Limited
TTPC Time Triggered Protocol Controller
), a nonprofit corporation nonprofit corporation n. an organization incorporated under state laws and approved by both the state's Secretary of State and its taxing authority as operating for educational, charitable, social, religious, civic or humanitarian purposes.  created to promote the dot-travel domain, submitted an application to ICANN this spring as part of the current round of sponsored TLD applications. The proposal seeks a 60-day start-up, authentication period during which only members of travel and tourism associations that belong to TTPC would be able to register. After this initial period, registration would be open to any business, organization, or governmental agency that can prove it is part of a travel association (e.g., tour operators, car rental agencies, airlines, hotels, CVBs, and so forth).

Under the proposal now before ICANN, TTPC would be responsible for creating products and services, pricing, eligibility criteria, name selection, dispute handling, and communication. Tralliance, a New York City-based for-profit company, would provide day-to-day management of the dot-travel online community and create a travel-specific search engine.
