Byline: The Register-Guard

"Giggle, Giggle, Quack" by Doreen Cronin, illustrated by Betsy Lewin. Simon & Schuster Simon & Schuster

U.S. publishing company. It was founded in 1924 by Richard L. Simon (1899–1960) and M. Lincoln Schuster (1897–1970), whose initial project, the original crossword-puzzle book, was a best-seller.

In the author's previous book, "Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type," Farmer Brown gives in to typewritten type·write

demands from his cows and hens for electric blankets and from the ducks for a diving A DIV Associate of Divinity  board.

Now, he needs a vacation. He hands over a list of instructions to his "city slicker" brother, Bob, and leaves for Hawaii. But we know something's up when the first note reads, "Tuesday night is pizza night (not the frozen kind!)," and we see Duck with a pencil in his beak beak

.

The unsuspecting Bob complies with the request and in no time seven pizzas are delivered to the barn. (Giggle, giggle, quack.)

"Wednesday is bath day for the pigs. ... Remember they have very sensitive skin," the next note reads. Of course, they like to use Farmer Brown's best bubble bath and towels. (Giggle, giggle, oink.) Farmer Brown checks in by phone a few times, but doesn't become suspicious until he calls - on movie night - and hears "Giggle, giggle, quack, giggle, moo, giggle, oink."

While the refrain, "Giggle, giggle, quack," isn't as catchy as "Click, clack, moo, Click, clack, moo" from the first book, Cronin has created a hilarious story that kids and adults will enjoy reading together.

Grown-ups will love the cow's movie choice, "The Sound of Moosic," and children will laugh at the animals' antics. Betsy Lewin received a Caldecott Honor Award for the illustrations in "Click, Clack, Moo" and she has interjected an abundance of humor humor, according to ancient theory, any of four bodily fluids that determined man's health and temperament. Hippocrates postulated that an imbalance among the humors (blood, phlegm, black bile, and yellow bile) resulted in pain and disease, and that good health was  into the sequel.

The cover illustration - Duck holding pencil and paper pencil and paper - An archaic information storage and transmission device that works by depositing smears of graphite on bleached wood pulp. More recent developments in paper-based technology include improved "write-once" update devices which use tiny rolling heads similar to mouse  as the cows, pigs and hens laugh merrily - lets readers know they're in for a good time and provides a clue to the writer of the "mysterious" notes.
