Poster and essay winners to receive MADD MADD Mothers Against Drunk Drivers Public health An organization that advocates stricter legislation against DUI and underage drinking, and provides support services for victims of DUI collisions. See DUI.  awards

The Lane County chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is a nonprofit organization with more than 600 chapters nationwide. MADD seeks to find effective solutions to the problems of drunk driving and underage drinking, while also supporting those persons whose relatives and friends have been killed by drunk  will hold an awards ceremony Tuesday to honor this year's poster and essay winners.

This year's contest theme was "Be a Hero - Not a Zero. Don't Drink and Drive."

Jessica Lucas Jessica Lucas (born September 24, 1985) is a Canadian actress. She is best known for her appearance as Sue Miller in Life As We Know It, acting alongside Amanda Bynes and Channing Tatum in She's the Man, and acting alongside Steven Strait and Laura Ramsey in  from Cascade Middle School and Cody Jordan from Eugene Christian (Elementary) School won first place in the poster contest. Liesel Sylwester from Kelly Middle School and Gina Jacobson from Eugene Christian School A Christian School is a school run on Christian principles or by a Christian organization.

The nature of Christian schools varies enormously from country to country according to the religious, educational, and political culture.
 took second place.

The poster contest received 102 entries.

In the 2003 MADD Essay Contest, Mary Hansen Mary Hansen (November 1, 1966 - December 9, 2002) was guitarist and singer with Stereolab.

Born in Maryborough near Brisbane in Australia, Hansen moved to London in the late 1980s and became a backing singer with the Essex-based indie band, The Wolfhounds.
 from Siuslaw High School in Florence won first place. Audrey Squires from Springfield High took second place, and Anna Larson from Siuslaw High took third place. The essay contest received 109 entries.

Several students in each category won honorable mention.

Tuesday's event will be at 7 p.m. in the training room at Eugene Water & Electric Board, 500 E. Fourth Ave. Student winners will receive awards ranging from gift certificates to $350 cash.

Junction City senior

wins $1,000 scholarship

Kelsey Allen, a senior at Junction City High School, has received a 2003 Built Ford Tough Trucks/FFA Scholarship from Gibson Motor Co. in Junction City. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a high school senior who belongs to the Future Farmers of America and plans to attend college in the fall of 2003.

Allen, the daughter of Terry and Carla Allen of Junction City, plans to study general agriculture at Oregon State University Oregon State University, at Corvallis; land-grant and state supported; coeducational; chartered 1858 as Corvallis College, opened 1865. In 1868 it was designated Oregon's land-grant agricultural college and was taken over completely by the state in 1885. .

Student chosen for sports ambassador program

Ben Hiller, an eighth-grade student at Cal Young Middle School, has been selected to travel to Rio de Janeiro Rio de Janeiro, city, Brazil

, Brazil, as a member of the U.S. People to People Sports Ambassador program.

Founded in 1956 by President Dwight Eisenhower, the program encourages exchanges between young people of different cultures through official meetings, educational site visits and athletic competition.

Hiller will play in the Brazilian Cup soccer tournament with international youth teams.

A soccer player for nine years, he currently plays with American Youth Soccer Organization.

Haley Blake of Eugene has been selected to participate in the Junior National Young Leaders Conference The Junior National Young Leaders Conference or JrNYLC is a program for sixth, and seventh grade students. It is held in the fall, spring, and summer in Washington, D.C., with an optional alumni conference in Boston the following year.  in Washington, D.C.

The leadership development program for middle school students offers educational activities and presentations, leadership exercises and tours of historic sites. Blake is a student at Emerald Christian Academy.
