Editors Executive Producer News City Desk: WILSON WELCOMES BABCOCK & WILCOX
 SUCCESS IN U.S. ENERGY MARKET
CAMBRIDGE, (Ontario), Oct. 1 /CNW/ - Michael Wilson, Minister of Industry, Science and Technology and Minister for International Trade, welcomed the announcement today by the International Division of Babcock & Wilcox (B&W), that it has won contracts valued at close to $250 million to design and produce steam generators for United States energy utilities.
The contracts are for the replacement of 14 nuclear replacement steam generators for two American utilities in the states of Florida and North Carolina. The fabrication and assembly of the generators will take place at B&W's Cambridge plant, ensuring the retention and creation of hundreds of skilled manufacturing jobs in Ontario. The two contracts account for about 400 person years of high technology work.
"B&W's success is a tribute to the productivity of the company's workforce and is a triumph for Canadian technology," said Mr. Wilson. "It reaffirms that Canada has what it takes - the qualified personnel, technology resources and the business climate - to compete in a demanding and evolving global marketplace. B&W has won these contracts in competition against major international suppliers and established itself as the leading world supplier of nuclear steam generators."
Mr. Wilson noted that B&W officials have credited this contract to the improved business climate fostered under the Canada-U.S. free trade agreement. "This success illustrates how federal government efforts to enhance and create new trade opportunities for Canadian businesses are paying off. We will continue to work with Canadian industry, not only to increase trade opportunities, but to strengthen our competitive position through improved national performance in areas such as learning, science and technology, and investment."
B&W's Cambridge-based International Division, a subsidiary of McDermott International Inc., is Canada's largest manufacturer of steam generation products and for decades has supplied equipment and services for customers in Canada and in more than 35 countries worldwide. B&W has a long history of supplying CANDU nuclear steam generators, including the supply of a unit for Ontario's first nuclear power facility in Pickering.
"B&W's latest success is a testimony to the excellence of the Canadian nuclear industry," said Mr. Wilson. "I'm very pleased to see that this Canadian expertise will help to make a growing number of American power generation stations safer and more reliable."
