Men for Gender Equality Now Equality Now is a non-governmental organization that works to protect the human rights of women around the world. The group provides an international framework for spreading awareness of issues and providing support to local grassroots groups working to address issues of concern to  is a FEMNET initiative founded on FEMNET's experience of working with women and men. This work has proved that men are critical partners in bringing about change towards gender equality; and that men who are gender sensitised, responsive and supportive are key allies in the struggle at every level. The initiative is a regional network of men from Kenya, Zambia, Malawi, South Africa South Africa, Afrikaans Suid-Afrika, officially Republic of South Africa, republic (2005 est. pop. 44,344,000), 471,442 sq mi (1,221,037 sq km), S Africa. , Ethiopia, Namibia and Somaliland.

The initiative came about as a result of a regional Men to Men Consultation on Gender Based Violence (GBV GBV Guided By Voices
GBV Gemeinsamer Bibliotheksverbund (Library Service Northern Germany)
GBV Gender Based Violence
GBV Gross Book Value (accounting)
) that was held in Nairobi in December 2001 and attended by 27 men from Kenya, Malawi, Namibia and South Africa. The consultation culminated in the development of a plan of action, which specified follow-up actions at the regional and national level. Participants committed themselves to take action and requested FEMNET to host the network of Men for Gender Equality Now. On the basis of this recommendation and the proposed follow-up actions, FEMNET developed a project and raised funds to support the network.

The need to involve men in initiatives for gender equality and specifically efforts to combat GBV is articulated in several global, regional and national commitments, including the Cairo Programme for Action; the Beijing Platform for Action (PfA) and the Southern African Development Cooperation(SADC SADC Southern African Development Community

Every person has a platform from which they can take action. As professionals, activists, policy makers, family members and citizens, gender responsive women and men have the possibility and responsibility to act to promote gender equality and, especially, to end GBV. Gender equality is an ideology whose time has come. Whether they believe in it or not, it impacts the lives of females and males of all ages, classes, socio-economic status, faiths and other groupings. The urgency to transform our society towards gender equality norms and practices cannot be over-emphasised.

The experience of working with men in the five countries over the past two years has shown that there are many possible platforms from which men who are committed to gender equality can act; as a starting point Noun 1. starting point - earliest limiting point

The regional review undertaken by FEMNET in 2002 confirmed that there are many opportunities, which the project can use, from individual male commitment to the highest levels of national, regional and international interventions as long as there is sustained commitment.

The overall goal of the project is the creation of a critical mass of African males who believe in gender equality and are influencing communities, organisations and the public to embrace gender equality and women's human rights as social norms. The main objective of the regional project is to create a core of male supporters for the long-term campaign to eliminate GBV in Africa and thereby contribute to the goals of the Dakar and Beijing PfAs. The specific objectives are to:

The Men for Gender Equality Now initiative has gained momentum this year. Its members took part in a FEMNET training of trainers regional workshop on GBV and HIV/ AIDS. This edition of FEMNET News highlights the activities members of the initiative have been involved in this year.
