Editorial. The year 2006 marks the 16th anniversary of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence campaign! This occasion presents an opportune time for celebration and reflection on women's achievements. Historically, the 16 Days campaign has been significant as it has employed a human rights framework to draw global attention to the universal problem of violence against women. Usually the campaign is marked from November 25th--the International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women, to December 10th the International Human Rights Day. The days are chosen symbolically to link Violence Against Women (VAW) and human rights. The 16 days campaign is pegged around a number of goals which include: raising awareness Raising awareness is a common phrase advocacy groups use to justify a particular event, brochure or even the entire organization. Raising awareness refers to alerting the general public that a certain issue exists and should be approached the way the group desires. about VAW as a human rights issue at all levels (national, regional, and international); strengthening local work around VAW; providing a forum in which organizers can develop and share new and effective strategies; demonstrating the solidarity of women around the world organizing against VAW as well as creating tools to pressure governments to implement promises made to eliminate VAW. This year grants an atmosphere for activists to build on the widespread energy and awareness on violence against women and strengthen the human rights focus of the campaign. It is an opportunity to both celebrate the impact of the campaign and push further the agenda for the fight against gender violence. In this edition of FEMNET News, we focus on the activities of the Men for Gender Equality Now Equality Now is a non-governmental organization that works to protect the human rights of women around the world.
