The acting Premier of New South Wales New South Wales, state (1991 pop. 5,164,549), 309,443 sq mi (801,457 sq km), SE Australia. It is bounded on the E by the Pacific Ocean. Sydney is the capital. The other principal urban centers are Newcastle, Wagga Wagga, Lismore, Wollongong, and Broken Hill. , William Bede Dalley William Bede Dalley (5 July 1831 - 28 October 1888) was an Australian politician and solicitor and was the first Australian appointed to the Privy Council of the United Kingdom. , was in the Galong area on 15 February 1885 when news reached him that the British government had accepted the New South Wales offer to send a contingent of troops to Sudan. Dalley and his party repaired to Galong Castle where they feasted in the dining room and drank a famous toast to Queen Victoria. Monte Scott was on hand to sketch the toast with Dalley at the centre of the party.

Included in the sketch was John Nagle Ryan who had inherited Galong Castle on the death in 1871 of his father Edward "Ned" Ryan. Ned Ryan had been convicted in 1816 for his part in the destruction of government buildings at Clonoulty, County Tipperary County Tipperary (Irish: Contae Thiobraid Árann) is a county in the Republic of Ireland situated in the province of Munster. Tipperary was one of the first Irish counties to be established in the 13th century. , Ireland, on the night of 7 September 1815. He arrived in Sydney aboard the Surrey on 26 December 1816 and on completing his 14 year sentence received a 'Certificate of Freedom' on the 29 January 1830. Today the property is St Clement's Monastery.

So many Irish settlers followed Ned Ryan to the area that in the 1850s the Presbyterian Reverend John Dunmore Lang John Dunmore Lang (25 August 1799 – 8 August 1878), Australian Presbyterian clergyman, writer, politician and activist, was the first prominent advocate of an independent Australian nation and of Australian republicanism.  disapprovingly called the Galong and Boorowa districts a "paradise of the Ryans" and "a veritable slice of the County of Tipperary". An exhibition "Galong--Paradise of the Ryans" is on display at the Canberra Museum and Gallery Canberra Museum and Gallery, an art gallery and museum in Canberra, the capital of Australia. Located on London Circuit, in Civic in the centre of the city. The gallery was opened on 13 February, 1998.  from 3 December 2005 to 26 March 2006 which depicts the powerful influence one Irish family on the pastoral region north of Canberra.

So if you are in Canberra before 26 March 2006 make sure you visit the Canberra Museum and Gallery.
