In this edition of Health SA Gesondheid all the articles focus on research conducted on vulnerable populations in our South African Society. The vulnerable populations range from children to adults. In the first article a theoretical framework for nursing the adult patient on pressure control ventilation in a critical care unit was described. This article contributes to the body of knowledge in critical care nursing and will assist critical care nurses in practice. This article is followed by a description of clinical care standards for the same group of vulnerable patients in the previous articles. These standards will be useful in ensuring quality nursing care and also lowering the risk of patients not surviving their stay in the critical care unit. Children who are severely mentally handicapped are not able to express themselves well to their caregivers and to community nurses. The research conducted with community nurses indicate that they feel inadequate to deal with these vulnerable children and their caregivers. These community nurses need in-service training to enable them to assist these children and caregivers. Patients who are drug dependent need to be assisted to come in contact with their internal world and take responsibility for their self-destructive behaviour. In this article the patients admit that they externalise their responsibility. Another vulnerable population are women with breast cancer. Results of research in this article show that these women can manage their diagnosis and treatment in a constructive manner if the health professionals in interaction with them provide them with clear information regarding their diagnosis and treatment. The last two articles address the youth as vulnerable population and their risk taking sexual behaviour. On the one hand the youth do not believe that they will become HIV positive but on the other they fear that they are already HIV positive and then want to spread the disease in revenge. It is clear from all these articles that health professionals as well as vulnerable populations need information regarding life-threatening issues. It is only through education that people can make informed decisions regarding health and health care.

In hierdie uitgawe van Health SA Gesondheid fokus al die artikels op navorsing wat uitgevoer is met kwesbare bevolkings in ons Suid-Afrikaanse samelewing. Hierdie kwesbare bevolking strek van kinders na volwassenes. In die eerste artikel word 'n teoretiese raamwerk vir die verpleging van die volwasse pasient op drukgekontroleerde ventilasie in 'n kritiekesorgeenheid beskryf. Hierdie artikel dra by tot die liggaam van kennis in kritiekesorgverpleging en sal kritiekesorgverpleegkundiges in praktyk help. Die artikel word opgevolg deur deur 'n beskrywing van kliniese sorgstandaarde vir dieselfde groep kwesbare pasiente van die vorige artikel. Hierdie standaarde sal bruikbaar wees in die versekering van gehalte verpleegsorg en ook die risiko verminder dat pasiente hulle verblyf in die kritiekesorgeenheid nie oorleef nie. Kinders wat ernstig geestesvertraagd is, is nie in staat om hulle self goed uit te druk aan hulle versorgers en gemeenskapverpleegkundiges nie. Die navorsing uitgevoer met gemeenskapverpleegkundiges dui aan dat hulle onopgewasse voel om hierdie kwesbare kinders en hulle versorgers to hanteer. Hierdie gemeenskapverpleegkundiges benodig indiensopleiding om hulle in staat te stel om hierdie kinders en versorgers te kan help. Pasiente wat dwelmafhanklik is behoort gehelp te word om in kontak met hulle interne wereld te kom en verantwoordelikheid te neem vir hulle selfvernietigende gedrag. In hierdie artikel erken die pasiente self dat hulle hul verantwoordelikheid eksternaliseer. 'n Ander kwesbare bevolking is vroue met borskanker. Resultate van navorsing in hierdie artikel wys daarop dat hierdie vroue hulle diagnose en behandeling op 'n konstruktiewe wyse kan bestuur as die gesondheidberoepsgroepe in interaksie met hulle, hulle voorsien met duidelike inligting betreffende hulle diagnose en behandeling. Die laaste twee artikels spreek die jeug as kwesbare bevolking aan en hulle neem van risiko seksuele gedrag. Aan die een kant glo die jeug nie dat hulle MIV positief sal raak nie, maar aan die ander kant vrees hulle dat hulle reeds MIV positief is en wil dan die siekte in weerwraak versprei. Dit is duidelik van al hierdie artikels dat die gesondheidsberoepsgroepe sowel as kwesbare bevolkings inligting benodig betreffende lewensbedreigende sake. Dit is slegs deur onderrig dat mense ingeligte besluite kan neem betreffende gesondheid en gesondheidsorg.
