Eden Group Announces its Eden OS V2.0 Operating System for Handheld Computing Devices.

CHESHIRE, England--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 16, 1996--Eden Group Limited today announced the availability of the latest version of its embedded real-time operating system (operating system) Real-Time Operating System - (RTOS) Any operating system where interrupts are guaranteed to be handled within a certain specified maximum time, thereby making it suitable for control of hardware in embedded systems and other time-critical applications. , Eden OS V2.0.

Eden OS V1.0 was released in 1995, and is currently used in the "Hitachi Multicommunicator Possible," now shipping and available in Japan. Supporting both 16- and 32-bit applications, Eden OS V2.0 is designed for easy implementation into a wide range of lower-cost, high-value handheld devices including PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants), electronic organizers, PICs (Personal Communicators) and smart mobile phones, as well as set top boxes and web browsers The following is a list of web browsers. .

Eden OS V2.0 is compact (requiring only 256kb of ROM and 128kb of RAM), completely portable and processor independent, thus allowing manufacturers to provide powerful, customized functionality at the right consumer price points.

"When consumers consider buying a product, they weigh the functionality it provides against the price," stated David Crisp, Managing Director of Eden Group Limited. "Eden's latest version of its operating system operating system (OS)

Software that controls the operation of a computer, directs the input and output of data, keeps track of files, and controls the processing of computer programs.
has been designed to address this demand by allowing manufacturers to build devices with enhanced functionality, performance and connectivity while keeping costs low."

and brand identity in the marketplace and avoids the burden of unnecessary or unwanted functions. It also allows for easy addition of new features and support for new technologies in the future, in response to consumer demand.

With its compactness and low memory requirements, the Eden OS V2.0 is ideal for use with all the popular low power, low cost, 32-bit RISC processors available today, thus giving designers freedom of choice for their particular application.

In addition, Eden OS V2.0 is well suited for complete ASIC-based systems using core microprocessor technologies.

Features

Eden OS is designed around what David Crisp calls "COMP." This means it is Compact, Open, Modular and Portable -- characteristics which are essential if the OS is to allow the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  to develop and ship successful low-cost, high-value products.

COMPACT

As a fully-featured OS, Eden OS V2.0 is extremely small and efficient. It requires only 256kb of ROM and 128kb of RAM which means that the system has more available memory for implementing other special functions In mathematics, special functions are particular functions such as the trigonometric functions that have useful or attractive properties, and which occur in different applications often enough to warrant a name and attention of their own.  and applications while still operating on small inexpensive processors. The minimum hardware requirements of the Eden OS V2.0 contributes to improved battery life through lower power requirements.

OPEN

Eden OS V2.0 is a fully open operating system. This allows manufacturers to integrate existing technology into new products thus shortening development time and reducing development overhead. Such an open system can be scaled down easily to meet only the requirements of the system and can be optimized for the amount of available ROM and RAM.

Being designed as an open operating system makes it easier for third party developers to provide more applications. The result is that manufacturers are able to offer consumers more fully featured products. An open API Open API (often referred to as OpenAPI) is a word used to describe sets of technologies that enable websites to interact with each other by using SOAP, Javascript any other web technology.  and an open GUI (Graphical User Interface) A graphics-based user interface that incorporates movable windows, icons and a mouse. The ability to resize application windows and change style and size of fonts are the significant advantages of a GUI vs. a character-based interface.  also make product differentiation an inexpensive proposition.

MODULAR

Eden OS V2.0 uses a modular approach allowing manufacturers to differentiate their products more easily and to provide easy field upgrades. The modularity enables the design team to tailor the product to their vision of functionality and `look and feel,' since individual modules can be written by OEMs themselves and incorporated.

Using the Dynamic Linking and Loading facility, field upgrades, system patches, software bugs and functional upgrades can be incorporated. This reduces manufacturer's risks by providing an easy path to system modifications.

PORTABLE

Eden OS V2.0 is portable through its processor independence. By allowing designers to choose the processor, manufacturers are able to tailor their hardware to the market they are addressing in terms of functionality and price-point.

This enables them to take advantage of the range of options now afforded by the many silicon vendors who offer embedded processor A CPU chip used in a system other than a general purpose workstation, desktop or laptop computer. Such chips are used by the billions every year in a myriad of products. See embedded system.  cores in their device libraries. A portable system can allow manufacturers to truly design an entire system on one chip, reducing manufacturing costs, increasing reliability and maximizing value to the consumer.

Eden OS V2.0 is also character and language independent allowing manufacturers to address easily the needs of world-wide markets. This offers significant cost savings through higher volumes and lower pricing.

Tools

Applications can be developed and debugged in Windows hosted Borland V4.5 IDE and can be debugged with Borland Turbo debugger (programming) Turbo Debugger - A source-level debugger designed for use with Borland and other compilers.

Additional Services

In addition to licensing the operating system, Eden provides system design consultancy, hardware interface layer porting and customization, server customization, ROM application software development, PC Companion Application software development and application support.

Conclusion

Eden OS V2.0 provides manufacturers and ISVs with lower risk and a better return on product development by shortening development lead times, reducing component count and materials cost while allowing for brand identity and product differentiation. This results in products which can easily and inexpensively meet the consumer demands in a growing, world-wide market.
