Here are the highlights from the Featured Expert column:

Agnico Eagle's performance is disconcerting dis·con·cert

to Bugos because the stock is one of five in his portfolio. However, he recognizes that the poor performance is related to the pricing of a financing (US $192 million, share + 1/2 warrant), which could be bullish if it brings in new Wall Street longs and the money is used smartly, or bearish Bearish

Words used to describe investor attitude. A bearish investor believes that a particular asset or the market as a whole will decline in value.

bearish
if the new shareholders dump their stock immediately and Agnico Eagle pays too high a price for something. The stock is free trading as far as Bugos understands (after Nov 14), so this is not only possible, but appears to be happening.

Newmont has suffered some shareholder animosity over first restating previous years' earnings and then missing their third quarter target by more than just a bit. This is on top of the already existing resentment over their acquisition of Normandy's hedgebook last year.

It hasn't gone unnoticed that Aurizon Mines and Eldorado Corp. have topped the charts over the short term, Aurizon recently, and Eldorado for some time. There's been accumulation in both, and both have been the subject of take over rumors related to the cash raised by Agnico Eagle's recent financing.

I hope Meridian doesn't do a financing soon. Mineweb's timely reporting (of some issues we've raised in the past ourselves) of fundamentals that could help price the deal for a buyer (usually an investment banker Investment Banker

The stock started to sell off on November 19, one day ahead of the release of Mineweb's report, but the same day Tim Wood announced Meridian threatened to sue him if the report was issued the next day:

Meridian Gold (MDG) has threatened to initiate a securities investigation in the US and Canada, as well as institute a defamation defamation

suit, should Mineweb proceed to publish an article about the company. The story is slated for distribution on Wednesday - Mineweb, Tuesday November 19, 2002

Securities investigation? Interesting. I wonder if my guess on a financing is correct. Of course, Wood didn't report that quite right. The company said it would pursue such a threat only if the article still contained the "erroneous or misleading information" it felt shouldn't be in the report. I don't think they said he couldn't publish it.
