Economy Giving Timber Companies a Rough Time. (Arkansas Business List Overview).

CONTINUED POOR PRICES and soft demand that brought about downtime and closures, the death of the head of Anthony Forest Products Co., one of the most devastating ice storms ever recorded and continued mergers marked the past year in Arkansas' timber industry.

The industry is one of the state's largest employers, providing work for some 47,000 Arkansans.

Nearly all of the publicly traded timber companies operating in the state were bleeding badly at the end of the year. Some tried to get rid of some of their debt by selling off properties.

Last year, West Fraser Timber Co. of Vancouver, British Columbia, entered the state with its purchase of Plum Creek Timber Co.'s Huttig mill. Seattle-based Plum Creek now is strictly a landowner with no manufacturing facilities. It bought out the forests previously owned by Georgia-Pacific Corp. that had been spun off into The Timber Co. While Plum Creek became the second-largest landholder with nearly 900,000 acres, its number of employees, 94, is quite small.

This year, another Canadian company, Domtar Inc. of Montreal, bought a portion of Georgia-Pacific Corp.'s pulp and paper business, including its uncoated fine paper mill and pulp facilities at Ashdown.

Annual paper capacity at the Ashdown mill is 825,000 tons, which is predominantly copier paper and includes other specialty and offset printing papers. The facility's market pulp capacity is 175,000 tons annually. The Ashdown mill has 1,250 employees.

Georgia-Pacific continues to own and operate its white-paper mill at Crossett and remains the industry's largest employer with 4,500 workers in Arkansas.

Domtar also is in a 50-50 joint venture with Anthony Forest Products Co. of El Dorado to manufacture and distribute PowerJoist, a solid-flange I-joint.

The El Dorado company lost its president and chief executive officer, John Lee Anthony Sr., on Oct. 5. He had battled cancer for more than a year. Aubra Anthony Jr. was elected president of the family-owned timber company, founded in 1916 by five brothers. Beryl Anthony Jr. remains chairman of the board.

Despite the awful financial reports from most of the public companies, all have been trying to restructure their companies so that when the economy does rebound, they'll be in a position to make money again.

International Paper Co. and Georgia-Pacific have sold off massive assets to concentrate on core products, and they've focused on cutting production to keep it in line with demand.
