Environmental regulations have forced industrial facilities to commit scarce capital reserves for abatement systems in order to stay in business. Approached correctly, these projects present an opportunity for achieving an economic benefit. This paper presents the results achieved from a CAD 9 million (US$ 5.76 million) project to reduce ambient total reduced sulfur (TRS See traffic engineering methods. TRS - term rewriting system ) levels in the vicinity of Abitibi-Consolidated's kraft mill in Fort Frances, Ontario Fort Frances, Ontario is a town, located in the northwestern part of Ontario, Canada. Its population (2001) was 8,315. It is in the Rainy River District. Fort Frances is a popular fishing destination and hosts the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship each summer. , Canada. The mill addressed several areas of kraft operations to achieve the project goals. An upgrade to the existing scrubber for the tall oil plant, for example, included pumps, process instrumentation, and controls. Revamping the control strategies and increasing capacity through system configuration changes reduced the frequent over-pressurization of the recovery system and associated release of gases and [H.sub.2]S alarms. The mill modified and recommissioned a condensate stripper Stripper Slang for an individual homeowner who strips the equity out of his or her home through mortgage refinancing. Diverting the gases to the incinerator greatly improved the operation and reliability of the lime kiln. The project has shown significant savings on top of the anticipated reduction in ambient odor levels.
