Economic benefits achieved from an odor reduction project.Application: Mills may use these findings to enhance similar environmental projects and obtain an improvement in mill operations. Environmental regulations have forced industrial facilities to commit scarce capital reserves for abatement systems in order to stay in business. Approached correctly, these projects present an opportunity for achieving an economic benefit. This paper presents the results achieved from a CAD 9 million (US$ 5.76 million) project to reduce ambient total reduced sulfur (TRS See traffic engineering methods. TRS - term rewriting system ) levels in the vicinity of Abitibi-Consolidated's kraft mill in Fort Frances, Ontario Fort Frances, Ontario is a town, located in the northwestern part of Ontario, Canada. Its population (2001) was 8,315. It is in the Rainy River District. Fort Frances is a popular fishing destination and hosts the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship each summer. , Canada. The mill addressed several areas of kraft operations to achieve the project goals. An upgrade to the existing scrubber for the tall oil plant, for example, included pumps, process instrumentation, and controls. Revamping the control strategies and increasing capacity through system configuration changes reduced the frequent over-pressurization of the recovery system and associated release of gases and [H.sub.2]S alarms. The mill modified and recommissioned a condensate stripper Stripper Slang for an individual homeowner who strips the equity out of his or her home through mortgage refinancing. Proceeds are generally not re-invested, but spent on consumer goods. Notes: Most people get rich by saving and investing wisely. to remove TRS contaminants from condensates. A concentrated noncondensible gas (CNCG CNCG Comisión Nacional para el Cambio Global CNCG Concentrated Non-Condensable Gas ) system upgrade included new loop seals, piping modifications, control valves, and an upgrade to DCS (1) See also DSC. (2) Digital Cross-connect System) A network switching and grooming device used by telecom carriers. See digital cross-connect. control. When burned in the lime kiln, CNCGs caused numerous upsets leading to high productivity and maintenance costs. A new incinerator provided a reliable place to burn the stripped gases and CNCGs. Diverting the gases to the incinerator greatly improved the operation and reliability of the lime kiln. The project has shown significant savings on top of the anticipated reduction in ambient odor levels. The gains were achieved by minimizing process waste flows, enhancing by-product by·prod·uct or by-prod·uct n. 1. Something produced in the making of something else. 2.
