Ecolab Ecolab, Inc., is a St. Paul, Minnesota based sanitation supply company founded in 1923. It was named "Economics Laboratory" before its name was changed to Ecolab in 1986.  Inc. has been named one of the 100 best-managed companies by INDUSTRY WEEK magazine, a 30-year-old publication that focuses on global manufacturing enterprises. A special report highlighting the winners will appear in the August 16 issue.

Winning companies were selected from the INDUSTRY WEEK 1000, a list of the world's largest publicly held manufacturing companies based on revenues. Waltham, Mass.-based Primark supplied the data for the IW 1000, which was published in June. Companies receiving this year's award represent 14 countries including Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Singapore, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. .

Selections were made after a lengthy evaluation that included: an analysis of the company's financial performance; review of a questionnaire that each INDUSTRY WEEK 1000 company was given an opportunity to fill out; research into each company's practices in areas such as philanthropy philanthropy, the spirit of active goodwill toward others as demonstrated in efforts to promote their welfare. The term is often used interchangeably with charity.  and safety; and voting by a panel of more than 100 business leaders, analysts, and academicians.

Winners will be recognized at the 100 Best-Managed Companies Awards Celebration and Executive Summit in Tucson, Ariz., in February.
