This set of books was created to increase the available vocal literature for the beginning middle school and high school student. This they do superbly. Both sets are very well done and very useful. They lead right into Joan Boytim's other series the First Book of Soprano (Alto, Tenor, Bass) Solos.

Each book contains early Broadway songs, art songs in English (a very few in translation from German) and some really fine settings of folk songs folk song, music of anonymous composition, transmitted orally. The theory that folk songs were originally group compositions has been modified in recent studies. . Like all collections that contain art songs, I don't find all of the art songs appealing, although many are. The rest (folk and Broadway) all are very useable.

The accompaniment CD is very well done by pianist Laura Ward. The CD is enhanced with some software (for both Mac and PC) that "allows a computer to slow down or speed up the accompaniment or to vary the pitch slightly. I, personally, didn't find this to be a very useful feature. It does work, however.

I only found two faults with the set and the first one is a matter of personal taste. I do not like teaching a great art song by Schubert et al in an English translation, even if it is a good one. My students all seem to really enjoy the challenge of learning the pronunciation pronunciation: see phonetics; phonology.

of a foreign language. The second one is more serious. The CD holder that the CD comes in is so difficult to open, extract the CD, and then replace it that the CD for the Baritone/Bass book was damaged and I can no longer use it. These CDs were in the back of the Soprano, Tenor and Bass/Baritone books. The holder for the Mezzo-soprano book is in the front and of a very different style and easy to operate.

This collection may be the best yet from Boytim.--Reviewed by Albert R. Brewer, NCTM NCTM National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
