Eastman wins energy efficiency awards.

KINGSPORT, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 6, 1995--For the second consecutive year, Eastman Chemical Company Eastman Chemical Company is a United States based chemical company, engaged in the manufacture and sale of chemicals, plastics and fibers. Eastman has 16 manufacturing sites in 10 countries, supplying its products throughout the world.  has been honored with two awards from the Chemical Manufacturers Association (CMA CMA - Concert Multithread Architecture from DEC. ) for improving energy efficiency.

Voluntary efforts to improve energy efficiency have earned Eastman's Longview, Texas Longview is a city in Texas, United States, located between Dallas, TX and Shreveport, LA. The population was 73,345 at the 2000 census, but a 2005 estimate placed the city's population at 75,609. , and Kingsport facilities two of 13 Energy Efficiency Awards to be presented Nov. 9 in Houston by CMA's energy committee. It is the second consecutive year the CMA has recognized these sites' efforts to improve energy efficiency and to reduce the environmental impact of their energy utilization.

"These projects are good examples of how our commitment to make continual improvements in environmental performance is paying off," said Lynda Popwell, vice president of health, safety and the environment at Eastman. "We've shown that increasing the efficiencies of operations not only makes good business sense, but it makes good environmental sense, too, because it reduces the demands on natural resources and provides even greater environmental protection."

The Texas Eastman Division project involved installing a new smoke-suppression system at an olefins production facility. In addition to providing smokeless smoke·less

flaring during periodic maintenance activities and shutdowns, the new system also allowed a significant reduction in the continuous methane purge to the flare. The methane purge is necessary to prevent damage to the flare tip. The new system reduced the methane purge by 75 percent, equivalent to about 2.1 percent of the olefins production unit's total energy consumption.

At Tennessee Eastman Division, a new pulverized coal-fired boiler A pulverized coal-fired boiler is an industrial or utility boiler that generates thermal energy by burning pulverized coal (also known as powdered coal or coal dust). This type of boiler dominates the electric power industry, providing steam to drive large turbines.  was installed that provided more efficient steam production -- 89 percent versus 83 percent -- over existing boilers -- in turn, requiring less coal and reducing the carbon dioxide carbon dioxide, chemical compound, CO2, a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that is about one and one-half times as dense as air under ordinary conditions of temperature and pressure.  produced per unit of energy. As part of the same project, Tennessee Eastman reduced plant sulfur dioxide sulfur dioxide, chemical compound, SO2, a colorless gas with a pungent, suffocating odor. CMA introduced the Energy Efficiency Award Program in 1993 to give member companies additional incentive to develop programs for energy efficiency improvement, to demonstrate the results of those efforts, and to gain deserved recognition for both the efforts and the results.

Eastman Chemical Company manufactures chemicals, fibers and plastics and had sales of $4.3 billion in 1994.
