Professional Vegetation Management (ProVM) and the American Forest Foundation have honored Earl and Wanda Barrs with the American Tree Farm System Forest farming is an agroforestry practice characterized by intentional, integrated, intensive and interactive management of an existing forested ecosystem wherein forest health is of paramount concern. It is neither forestry nor farming in the traditional sense. ([R]) 2006 Outstanding Achievements in Sustainable Forestry Sustainable forestry is a forest management practice. The basic tenet of sustainable forestry is that the amount of goods and services yielded from a forest should be at a level the forest is capable of producing without degradation of the soil, watershed features or seed source  Award. During the last decade, the Barrs have brought more than 4,000 teachers, school children and forestry professionals to hike, observe wildlife and participate in hands-on sustainable environmental practices at their Cochran, Ga., tree farm, Gully Branch.

"This award recognizes the commitment of those who make sustainable forestland for·est·land

management a priority in their daily lives," said Amie Dunn, BASF ProVM communications manager. "Since the Barrs purchased their forestland 20 years ago, they have worked diligently to make it an educational model of best management techniques in forestry."

The 1,200 acres of Gully Branch Tree Farm contain a 40-acre lake, two small ponds, a swamp, loblolly lob·lol·ly

stands and upland and bottomland hardwoods. There are thriving food plots to support all wildlife species at Gully Branch, including deer, quail quail, common name for a variety of small game birds related to the partridge, pheasant, and more distantly to the grouse. There are three subfamilies in the quail family: the New World quails; the Old World quails and partridges; and the true pheasants and seafowls.  and wild turkey.

"We've consulted with wildlife professionals to make sure we're managing our forest stands in ways that support habitat development and biodiversity," Wanda Barrs said. "For example, we manage our deer population according to according to

 quality deer management standards."

A Project Learning Tree facilitator, Wanda conducts workshops and training that prepare teachers from Georgia universities to become Project Learning Tree educators.

Earl is involved in a number of sustainable forestry groups, including the Society of American Foresters and the Georgia Forestry Association. He has partnered with many private and industrial forest landowners to implement long-term strategies for Georgia's future in forestry, and works with power production and biomass research leaders to develop alternative uses for excess pulp.

The conviction that drives the Barrs' extensive work in their community is evident in the forests of Gully Branch. The Barrs' vision for Gully Branch is to grow and promote a sustainable forest for present and future generations. By sharing their Tree Farm with students, teachers, legislators and landowners, they are helping make their vision of a healthy, enjoyable environment a reality for everyone.
