This winter we have turned our attentions to the south, where many of our Neotropical bird species migrate to their wintering grounds. In February the Wisconsin Bird Conservation Initiative (WBCI WBCI Wideband Cancellation of Interference ) and the Wisconsin Society of Ornithology ornithology Branch of zoology dealing with the study of birds. Early writings on birds were largely anecdotal (including folklore) or practical (e.g., treatises on falconry and game-bird management). It is in this spirit that Eagle Optics became involved in sponsoring an optics drive to benefit field workers and scientists in the tropics tropics, also called tropical zone or torrid zone, all the land and water of the earth situated between the Tropic of Cancer at lat. 23 1-2°N and the Tropic of Capricorn at lat. 23 1-2°S. through a program called Birders' Exchange. Birders' Exchange is a program administered by the American Birding Association The American Birding Association (ABA) is a non-profit organization of people interested in birding. Membership is open to all, but many of its publications and programs have historically been aimed at birders who like making difficult field identifications and finding rare species. for the purpose of supplying equipment needs (binoculars, field guides) to researchers, conservationists, and educators in the tropics. The equipment donated through Birders' Exchange assists these individuals in gathering the data necessary to implement essential bird conservation efforts. Eagle Optics sponsored this optics drive for Birders' Exchange by contributing optics to match those donations made by symposium attendees. By doing so, they encouraged participants to make contributions knowing that their donations would have the added value of our own matching donation. In addition to their work with WSO/WBCI, Eagle Optics assisted the local Wild Birds Unlimited store with their own effort to collect binoculars for Birders' Exchange. To promote their optics drive, Wild Birds Unlimited offered a 15% discount to patrons who donated used optics for Birders' Exchange. Eagle Optics worked as a collector of these donations to send to Birders' Exchange as well as contributing additional optics to the Wild Birds Unlimited collection. The results of their collected efforts were phenomenal. Through the work of WSO, WBCI, Wild Birds Unlimited, and Eagle Optics, an impressive collection of 67 binoculars, a spotting scope, 2 tripods, and 12 field guides were gathered. This equipment will find a second life in the hands of researchers working to help "our" birds during their time away from nesting grounds here in North America.
