EYE-CATCHING ART : EXHIBIT DRAWS ON HISTORY OF ZIMBABWE.

``These are very priceless items,'' said Eve Everett, president and founder of the museum. ``We're very fortunate to bring these items here.''

The exhibit, A Celebration of African Culture, will open Saturday at 3 p.m. at the museum, at 416 Lumber Ave., Suite C. Kadzombe is expected to speak at 4:30 p.m.

The museum also will be open from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The event is free; however, donations will be accepted.

 Everett, the artists formed the sculptures from rock called shona stone, which was collected from caves that are part of the 800-year-old Zimbabwe ruins that gave the central African Central African may mean:

``The rock comes from deep caves,'' said Everett. ``It's a mystical type of stone that is turned into magnificent artwork.''

The artwork on display falls into three categories: contemporary, abstract and fine art. Works are portrayed on seven types of stone: serpentine serpentine (sûr`pəntēn, –tīn), hydrous silicate of magnesium. It occurs in crystalline form only as a pseudomorph having the form of some other mineral and is generally found in the form of chrysotile (silky fibers) and , green serpentine, ropoko, semiprecious opal, semiprecious verdite, tiger stone and soap stone.

Contemporary pieces are the rounded or tilted pieces, with block features of eyes, nose and mouth.

The abstract pieces have no distinguishable characteristics, unlike the fine art pieces that show unique details and easily identifiable characteristics.
