EXTREME COLD SPELL ON HEELS OF STORM WEATHER SERVICE PREDICTS RECORD-BREAKING CHILLY WEEKEND.

The Antelope Valley
 late Thursday and into this morning will be followed by an extreme cold air mass from the Sierra expected to bring potentially record-breaking temperatures this weekend, the National Weather Service said.

Residents are advised to brace for temperatures likely to dip well into the teens early Saturday and Sunday, threatening record lows that have stood for more than 40 years.

 said could dump as much as an inch of snow on the Antelope Valley and even more at higher elevations on the Antelope Valley Freeway The Antelope Valley Freeway is a freeway in Los Angeles and Kern counties in southern California. The National Weather Service forecasts early morning lows of 16 degrees for Saturday and 13 degrees for Sunday in both major Antelope Valley cities.

``The amount of cold air out there is unusual,'' Meyer said.

The Weather Service recommends insulating water pipes with cloth, and securing animals and other pets indoors.

Other precautionary measures include making sure furnace filters are replaced and chimney flues are cleaned.
