The unharmed driver and what was left of his bus ended up on Carthusian Road, Cheylesmore, leaving the roof on the other side of the 10ft bridge on The Hiron.

The smash happened just after 7.20am this morning. The bus was not carrrying passengers and was not on a regular bus route.

Mum-of-two Vicky Sehgal, 35 (right), who lives on the corner of Benedictine Road and The Hiron, was woken by the crash.

She said: "I thought 'Oh, my God.' You know when you don't believe something and think you're still dreaming? I looked out the window and thought 'that's what it is.'

"The driver turned his lights off and went upstairs to see if the roof was on there. Obviously it was not.

"I've witnessed it before. It's the second time. People walk their dogs there and there are allotments down there. It's dangerous."

Dad-of-two Graham Burton, 67, who lives on the other corner, said: "It's a good job there was no one on board. It has happened many a time."

Travel Coventry spokesman Phil Bateman said: "There is going to be an internal investigation as to how the vehicle and driver came to be on this road.

"And there will be an engineering investigation to see if the bus has been damaged beyond economical repair."

A Network Rail spokeswoman said there was no damage to the bridge. No trains were affected as it was undergoing maintenance work.
