 EXTERNAL BREAST REPLACEMENTS
A POPULAR & SAFE ALTERNATIVE TO IMPLANTS
For the approximately 2 million women in the U.S. who have lost breasts to cancer, additional surgery and silicone implants -- and the accompanying health risks -- are not their only choices. In fact, less than 20 percent of breast cancer survivors choose implants or reconstruction. The majority choose an external silicone breast replacement. The external breast form (prosthesis) replicates the weight and softness of a natural breast. It is traditionally worn inside a bra, however, there is a new model called Amoena Affinity which is attached safely to a woman's chest with a special adhesive skin support.
Because it does not require a bra to stay in place, the Amoena Affinity gives women fashion options that are not available with traditional breast forms. It can be worn for up to a week before removing and reapplying the special adhesive skin support.
"Women who have lost breasts to cancer are especially concerned about the issues of safety raised by the FDA restrictions on implants," said Ronnie Kaye, a psychotherapist and breast cancer survivor who chose not to have reconstruction. "Women should know that there are unquestionably safe alternatives available and that they can lose breasts and go on to lead perfectly happy lives."
External breast forms have come a long way since the not-so- distant days when doctors told women to use socks or packets of bird seed to stuff their bras. The technology to create comfortable, lifelike breast forms was pioneered by the Amoena Corporation, based in Atlanta. In 1975 company co-founders Cornelius and Joachim Rechenberg developed and patented a process to enclose a special silicone inside a polyurethane envelope for use as a breast prosthesis. Since its initial breakthrough in silicone technology, Amoena has continued to introduce innovations designed to meet the special needs of women who have lost breasts to cancer. The Amoena Affinity, introduced this spring, is the latest design in the line of more than a dozen styles of external breast forms. As one of the only U.S.-based manufacturers of external breast forms, Amoena is the industry and world leader. Every other minute, a woman somewhere in the world buys an Amoena form.
