EXPERCOMP SERVICES LIMITED BRINGS NEW COMPUTING POWER TO SMALL BUSINESS
TORONTO, Oct. 1 /CNW/ - ExperComp Services Limited, a subsidiary of IBM Canada Ltd., is providing small business virtually the same, high-performance computing power normally found only in major corporations.
ExperComp announced today the launch of its state-of-the-art line of Ambra 486 Personal Computers, which represent the leading edge of 486 microprocessor technology. The Ambra 386 family of products was launched nationally in August of this year to a very receptive Canadian market.
In honour of the launch, ExperComp is introducing its first special consumer promotion. Lotus 1-2-3 for Windows, with a $595 retail value, the world's most popular spreadsheet program, will be provided free of charge to all purchasers of any Ambra Personal Computer. This promotion, which will be in effect until November 13, 1992, is being backed by a print advertising campaign.
"The response to the launch of our Ambra 386s has been excellent." said Andre Turgeon, Chief Operating Officer of ExperComp. "With the launch of the Ambra 486s today, we are now able to serve those customers who need a more powerful system than the 386 but at the same time a product they can understand and afford."
Two series of Ambra computers are being offered in the new 486 line: the Sprinta 486 Series and the Hurdla 486 Series, available in either 486 SX or 486 DX2 configurations. Both are based on Intel's new DX2(TM) processors for 486 systems. The new DX2 will double the computer's processor speed and improve overall system performance by up to 70 per cent. Retail prices for the 486 computers will start at $2,199, including colour monitor and mouse.
"Small and home-based business owners want a high-performance computer they can understand, afford and use instantly," said Mr. Turgeon. "Our new 486 computers are exactly the tools these entrepreneurs need. Also, considering the increase in marketplace acceptance of OS/22.0, the Company is pleased to announce the Ambra 486 compatibility with this new operating system."
ExperComp Services Limited, specifically formed to meet the computing needs of the growing small business, home office and home markets, backs all Ambra computers with a toll-free telephone "help line", a free one-year warranty and free on-site service and support for one year. If required, a technician can be sent directly to a customer's home from one of ExperComp's 55 service centres across Canada. In cites where service centres exist, that service is same day. Elsewhere, ExperComp can provide next day service.
The "help line" will be operational from 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Monday to Friday and 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Customers can call a toll-free number (1-800-363-0077) to find their nearest retailer. Ambra computers are being distributed to retailers by Merisel Canada Inc. of Concord, Ontario and Hartco Enterprises Inc. of Montreal, Quebec.
The Ambra family of computers is being backed by a national television and print advertising campaign highlighting the slogan "People make it happen". Television commercials began running at the end of August, and the print campaign will appear in newspapers across Canada.
Both the Sprinta 486 and Hurdla 486 series are equipped with either a 100 or 200 Megabyte hard drive, four Megabytes of RAM and 64K or 256K high-speed cache. All 486 SX models are upgradeable to 486 DX2 speeds using Intel's OverDrive(TM) processor. The Sprinta Series comes with three expansion slots and operates at speeds of 25 to 50 Megahertz, while the Hurdla Series, with six expansion slots, operates at speeds of 25, 33 or 66 Megahertz, depending on the model chosen.
The entire Ambra line also features a new Ultra VGA, low radiation, non-interlaced, VESA compatible display. This provides reduced screen flicker, faster response time and sharper images, resulting in improved ergonomics, including decreased user fatigue.
"With the introduction of the Ambra Personal Computer, Canadians now have real access to the personal computer," said Turgeon. "For those who require a more powerful computer with expanded capabilities and the ability to upgrade, we have the Ambra 486. For those who need a basic, no-frills computer at an affordable price, we have the full family of Ambra 386 computers."
ExperComp Services Limited, a subsidiary of IBM Canada Ltd., was formed in June of 1992. It is a full-service computer company offering high-quality computer products and services for use in small business, the home office and also, for the home.
